The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning to Ghana’s security leadership, vowing to hold the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) accountable for any election-related deaths during the 2024 general elections.
The party called on the country’s security agencies to implement robust measures to ensure the safety of citizens during the voting process.
NDC’s Stance on Election Security
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, underscored the party’s zero-tolerance policy for violence during elections.
“The NDC and, by extension, the people of Ghana will hold the IGP, the Chief of Defence Staff, and all security heads responsible for the loss of a single life in the 2024 general elections,” Gyamfi said.
“Elections are about counting heads, not cutting heads. No person must lose their life on the altar of elections.”
Gyamfi urged security agencies to act with impartiality and professionalism, emphasizing the need to protect lives and uphold democratic principles.
Confidence in Victory
The NDC’s confidence in the upcoming elections was evident, with Gyamfi expressing optimism about the party’s chances of securing victory. He praised the qualities of their candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama, as a leader who embodies truth and integrity.
“We have no doubt that Ghanaians will choose an honest leader who upholds the virtue of truth over one who is completely allergic to truth,” he stated.
Call for Peaceful Elections
The NDC’s appeal for a peaceful and secure electoral process aligns with their commitment to safeguarding democracy in Ghana. The party urged citizens, stakeholders, and the security forces to work together to ensure a violence-free election.
Why This Matters
As Ghana gears up for the 2024 general elections, maintaining security and peace remains a top priority. The NDC’s strong message reflects the broader national sentiment that every life is valuable and must be protected during the democratic process.
