Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed confidence in the party’s chances of winning the upcoming December general elections outright in the first round. Speaking on The Point of View program with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Mr. Kwetey stated that while the NDC is optimistic about its prospects in the presidential race, the ultimate decision lies with the Ghanaian electorate.
“We are confident of a first-round victory, but, in the end, it is up to the people of Ghana,” he remarked.
He also addressed concerns about the Electoral Commission (EC), noting that although the commission has not lived up to the NDC’s expectations, the party remains assured of its ability to secure victory.
Mr. Kwetey criticized the EC for challenges that delayed special voting in the Western and Eastern regions, describing the situation as disappointing.
“It’s unfortunate that we have no real alternatives. The Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission claims to be the best in our history, but the evidence doesn’t support that assertion,” he said.
He contrasted the current EC’s performance with that of former commissioners like Afari Gyan and Charlotte Osei, whom he described as more independent and competent. He also raised concerns about the current leadership’s composition and capability, questioning their competence.
“For instance, the delays in special voting in two major regions show a lack of preparedness and poor execution. These hitches indicate they haven’t handled the process effectively,” he added.
