The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) has accused Joseph Yamin, the National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of leading a mob to interfere with bullion bars belonging to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) at the PMMC Assay Centre.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 18, PMMC said the bullion bars in question were part of the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), an initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s gold reserves and supporting the economy.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 17, and led to a standoff at the National Assay Centre at the Aviance Cargo Terminal. The situation escalated to the point where police intervention was required. After several hours of negotiations, the bullion bars were transferred to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for safekeeping while efforts to resolve the matter continued.
The disruption also affected a private gold exporter, who was processing gold for export at the time.
PMMC described the event as “unfortunate,” condemning it as an “unlawful action” that disrupted lawful operations and created unnecessary tension. The company warned that such incidents could harm Ghana’s reputation in the international bullion market and undermine confidence among global gold buyers.
The statement urged all stakeholders to act responsibly to safeguard the country’s economic interests and its standing in the global gold trade. PMMC, which legally serves as the National Assayer, expressed deep concern over the actions taken at the Assay Centre and called for greater respect for lawful processes.
