Workers at National Identification Authority began an indefinite strike Wednesday after rejecting management’s appeal for more time to address long-standing disputes over pay and working conditions.

The employees, represented by the Public Services Workers’ Union under the Trades Union Congress, are demanding the immediate approval and implementation of migration reports tied to their conditions of service.

In a statement signed by Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor and Divisional Chairman Bismark Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl, union leaders instructed members nationwide to stop work effective midnight Tuesday and remain off duty until further notice.
“Effective 12:00 midnight, the indefinite strike is fully activated,” the statement said, adding that no member of the NIA division was expected to report to work during the industrial action.
Regional union executives were also directed to form monitoring teams to ensure compliance across NIA offices nationwide.

The walkout is expected to disrupt core services at NIA centers across Ghana, including the registration and issuance of Ghana Cards and other identification services.

NIA management had appealed to workers to allow the government an additional two weeks to finalize processes related to the approval and implementation of the migration reports. Union leaders, however, rejected the request, adopting the slogan: “No retreat, no surrender until victory.”
