Dominic Ayine Commits to Protecting Human Rights with Overhaul of Public Tribunal System
Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate, has pledged to safeguard citizens’ rights with the reintroduction of a revised public tribunal system, assuring that human rights violations will not occur under his leadership.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, Dr. Ayine addressed concerns raised in the Africa Watch Human Rights Report (Volume 4) regarding past abuses linked to public tribunals. He assured lawmakers that such incidents would be prevented in the future.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), to which Dr. Ayine belongs, had proposed the revival of public tribunals in its 2024 manifesto, aiming to decentralize the delivery of justice across the country.
To ensure the system’s integrity, Dr. Ayine outlined plans to draft and enact a Public Tribunal Court Act. This legislation, he said, would regulate tribunal operations, establish safeguards, and ensure fair and just proceedings. He also reaffirmed his commitment to aligning the country’s legal framework with the principles set out in the 1992 Constitution.
“My proposal is to enact a comprehensive Public Tribunal Act with clear restrictions on tribunal conduct,” Dr. Ayine said.
