The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ketu North Constituency of the Volta Region has urged the police to ramp up security in the area to prevent violence during Saturday’s elections.

Mark Thompson Gbeti, the NPP Chairman for Ketu North, emphasized the need for the police to maintain their integrity and ensure peace following recent violent incidents, including the destruction of campaign materials and attacks on party members.

Addressing the media, Gbeti expressed concerns about rising tensions in the constituency, which is expected to be a key battleground in the parliamentary race between Enoch Amegbletor of the NPP and Edem Agbana of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He highlighted an incident on November 21, 2024, when stones were thrown at Amegbletor’s campaign team during a community engagement in Tadzewu, forcing them to flee. The situation escalated into a confrontation, during which Mr. Philipson Eli Dzokoto, a regional communications team member, was severely assaulted and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Gbeti criticized the police for their failure to arrest those responsible for the attack, noting that the lack of action undermines public confidence in the electoral process and emboldens those seeking to disrupt peace.

He issued a three-day ultimatum for the police to expedite investigations, arrest the suspects, and take appropriate legal action. If no action is taken within this timeframe, the NPP has warned it will escalate the matter to higher authorities and pursue all legal options to protect the safety and rights of its members and the wider constituency.

The NPP leader also urged the police to uphold the principles of their profession, ensuring the safety of voters and maintaining law and order on election day.
