A political coalition led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) held a large-scale protest in central Accra on Monday, calling for the reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo following her suspension by President John Dramani Mahama—a decision that has ignited sharp criticism across the political divide.

Protesters assembled early in the day in a parking area opposite the Supreme Court, later marching through key routes in the capital. The demonstration, according to organizers, aims to defend judicial independence and denounce what they characterize as a politically motivated and unconstitutional suspension.

Several opposition parties—including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM)—joined the NPP in the demonstration, forming a rare cross-party alliance.

“The decision to suspend the Chief Justice undermines the judiciary and endangers the rule of law,” an NPP spokesperson said at the rally. “We are united in demanding that this act be reversed immediately.”

Protesters delivered a formal petition to judicial authorities at the Supreme Court. Organizers also announced plans to submit further petitions to Parliament and the Office of the President, pressing for a reinstatement and broader reforms to safeguard judicial independence.
