The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has warned that its members may be forced to defend themselves if violent attacks allegedly carried out by individuals linked to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) continue.
The NPP condemned the actions of what it described as “rampaging NDC youth” targeting its members and supporters, calling for an immediate end to the violence to prevent further escalation.
Salam Mustapha, the NPP’s National Youth Organizer, expressed concern over the situation, urging the NDC leadership to address the actions of its supporters and calling on law enforcement to maintain peace during the post-election period.
The tensions come in the wake of Ghana’s 2024 general elections, which saw John Dramani Mahama of the NDC elected President. Reports of clashes and unrest have emerged, raising concerns about political stability and public safety.
Mustapha emphasized that while the NPP seeks peace, they will defend themselves if necessary. He urged supporters and Ghanaians to remain calm and reminded them that violence and division have no place in the nation’s democratic process.
