Ghana’s National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a directive mandating the removal of all outdoor advertising billboards affixed to gantries, pedestrian bridges, and vehicular overpasses across the Greater Accra Region. Municipal assemblies have been given 21 days to comply, after which enforcement measures will be initiated against non-compliant entities.

The order stems from growing safety concerns and follows violations of the national Services-Advertising Specification for Outdoor Signs (GS: 847:2019), which designates such structures solely for traffic management purposes.

“We are taking this action to reduce visual distractions on our roads and ensure that structures like footbridges and overpasses serve their intended purpose—safe and efficient traffic management,” the NRSA said in a statement.

The Authority emphasized the directive as a matter of public interest, warning that the prioritization of commercial advertising over traffic safety cannot be allowed. “This is not just a regulatory requirement, it’s about protecting lives. Advertising cannot come at the cost of road safety,” the statement added.

The NRSA has urged advertisers, municipal authorities, and relevant stakeholders to work collaboratively toward swift compliance, underscoring the move as part of broader efforts to improve urban road safety in the capital region.
