Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) has once again demonstrated its dominance in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), securing a semi-final spot after a fiercely contested quarter-final match in Cape Coast on Thursday, 24th October.

At the SGS Auditorium, the reigning champions faced stiff competition from St. James Seminary Senior High School and Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary. The high-stakes battle was marked by intense moments, showcasing the sharp intellect and strategy of all three schools. However, it was PRESEC, the eight-time NSMQ winners, who emerged victorious, reinforcing their reputation as quiz powerhouses.

PRESEC, Pope John, and St. James Seminary had all successfully navigated the one-eighth stage, setting the stage for what turned out to be a nail-biting quarter-final. The defending champions ultimately claimed victory with 59 points, while Pope John put up a strong fight, finishing with 46 points. St. James Seminary, despite their determined effort, ended the contest with 31 points.

The match began with PRESEC taking an early lead, racking up 26 points in the first round. Pope John trailed close behind with 21 points, while St. James followed with 20. The second round saw PRESEC extend their lead to 38 points, capitalising on bonus questions. Pope John stayed in contention with 30 points, while St. James dropped to 17.

As the competition reached its critical third and fourth rounds, PRESEC’s teamwork and academic prowess shone through, pushing their score to 50 points by the end of the fourth round. Pope John remained close with 43 points, keeping the pressure on the defending champions, while St. James maintained their position at 31 points.

In the final round, PRESEC held their nerve, securing a total of 59 points and a coveted place in the semi-finals. Pope John finished with a respectable 46 points, while St. James Seminary rounded out the competition with 31.

With this win, PRESEC continues their quest for a record ninth NSMQ title, solidifying their status as the team to beat in this year’s competition.
