The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has given the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) a one-week ultimatum to release all withheld 2024 WASSCE results or face widespread protests across the country.
In a statement, NUGS demanded that the head of WAEC Ghana be removed, accusing the council of unfairly treating candidates accused of examination malpractice. The union voiced concerns over WAEC’s failure to provide affected students with a fair hearing before withholding or canceling their results. It also condemned the practice of withholding entire results for students found guilty of malpractice in a single subject, arguing that only the affected paper should be nullified.
Additionally, NUGS criticized WAEC for allegedly delaying the release of results until after university admission deadlines, preventing students from securing placements in public universities. The union has also raised alarms about the absence of a clear appeal process for students to challenge the council’s decisions.
In a letter to WAEC dated January 2, 2025, NUGS formally addressed these issues, but they claim the council has yet to respond positively.
At a media briefing, NUGS President Daniel Korley warned of large-scale demonstrations if the demands were not met. He stressed that the credibility of WAEC is at risk if the council doesn’t address these grievances, and called for urgent reforms within the organization.
“Education is a fundamental right, and WAEC must uphold justice, transparency, and accountability. The credibility of WAEC is at stake if students and the general public lose confidence in its fairness,” Korley said.
He added that NUGS would pursue legal and advocacy channels, including seeking judicial intervention, if WAEC does not act promptly. “NUGS stands with every student affected by WAEC’s actions, and we will not rest until justice is served,” he concluded.
