Ghanaian musician and cultural ambassador Okyeame Kwame made a striking appearance at the 2024 Earthshot Prize ceremony in South Africa, proudly donning traditional Ghanaian kente cloth.
The event, held on 6 November in Cape Town, saw the artist stand alongside Prince William of Wales, capturing the attention of attendees with his vibrant attire. Sharing his experience on Facebook, Okyeame Kwame expressed gratitude to his followers for encouraging him to represent his heritage.
“Standing next to Prince William of Wales, I was honored. When I was invited to the #EarthshotPrize awards, I asked you, my wise counsel, whether I should wear a suit or represent as an African prince. Ninety percent of you suggested I wear my kente. So, I listened and wore my Bonwire kente. Everybody wanted to take a picture with me. Thank you for advising me that #madeinghana is the way,” he wrote.
The Earthshot Prize, inspired by John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot project, celebrates innovative solutions to climate and environmental challenges. This year’s winners were announced during a star-studded ceremony hosted by Billy Porter and Bonang Matheba.
The awards, first launched in 2021, aim to support and scale groundbreaking initiatives addressing the planet’s most pressing issues. Okyeame Kwame’s decision to highlight Ghanaian culture added a unique touch to the occasion, emphasizing the global importance of celebrating cultural heritage in sustainability discussions.
