A 35-year-old man, Mukila Ziblim, has died from gunshot wounds sustained during an attack by youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Damongo Collation Centre in the West Gonja Municipality. The attack occurred on December 8, 2024, when the youth vandalized electoral materials and set fire to the Electoral Commission’s storeroom.

Destroyed Electoral Materials

Ziblim was brought to a local hospital with a bullet wound to his chest and died less than an hour later. Hospital officials confirmed his body has been deposited in the morgue.

The attack saw the destruction of vital electoral materials, including laptops, pink sheets, and ballot boxes. In response, police fired live ammunition at the protesters, which led to the fatal shooting of Ziblim.

Rev. Fr. Lazarus Annyereh, Chairman of the Savannah Regional Peace Council, expressed dismay over the incident, blaming both the police and political leadership for the violence. He questioned whether the NDC leadership had upheld its responsibility to ensure peace and criticised the police’s use of live bullets.

“This tragedy tarnishes the image of Damongo and could label the region as violent, undermining efforts for peaceful elections,” Rev. Fr. Annyereh said. “This should not be the cost of democracy.”

Ziblim’s death marks the third casualty of the election, following earlier reports of gun-related fatalities in the Northern and Central Regions.
