Ghana’s Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has dismissed claims that the government’s recent flurry of infrastructure project inaugurations is a strategy to win votes ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Thursday, 21 November, the Vice Chairman of the NPP Manifesto Committee asserted that the commissioning of these projects is evidence of the government’s commitment to sustained development, rather than a last-minute bid for electoral favour.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah explained that many of the projects had been years in the making and were only now reaching completion as part of the government’s broader development agenda. He emphasised that the timing of these inaugurations was coincidental and not dictated by the electoral calendar.

“These commissions are part of a bigger track record,” he said. “If your track record on infrastructure speaks well for you, then the commissioning will just be the icing on the cake. If not, it will be an exercise in futility.”

The Minister highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to deliver high-quality infrastructure to improve the lives of Ghanaians. He cited the commissioning of 80 new schools as an example, noting that these were not the only schools built since the NPP took office in 2017.

“In my constituency, you will see school blocks, dormitories, and more. People have witnessed the work done over the years and are now seeing what is being completed in the final stretch,” he added.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah assured that infrastructure development would remain a priority beyond the election period, reflecting the administration’s vision for sustained progress and growth across the country.
