Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo from Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized a recent Supreme Court decision regarding parliamentary seats, which has created a standoff within Parliament.

The case was initiated by NPP MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who challenged Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling that gave NDC MPs majority status in Parliament. As a result, New Patriotic Party (NPP) members boycotted parliamentary sessions, creating deadlock.

However, with the Supreme Court’s latest ruling reversing Bagbin’s decision, Parliament is now expected to reconvene, with the NDC returning to its original Minority status.

“It’s unfortunate the Supreme Court ruled this way. This wasn’t something that required legal interpretation—it’s clear to everyone, even to a child,” Vanderpuye said. He suggested that the ruling might further damage the court’s public image, adding, “If the Supreme Court believes it has the authority to alter the status quo in Parliament, let it go further and order us to sit.”

He added that “around 99%” of NDC MPs have no plans to attend Parliament following the ruling, although they would consider reconvening if Speaker Bagbin issued a formal call.

This case follows Speaker Bagbin’s October 17 ruling declaring certain seats vacant over alleged constitutional breaches. Afenyo-Markin subsequently challenged this decision in court, leading to the Supreme Court’s intervention.
