Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Tuesday denied receiving any formal medical documentation concerning former Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta’s fitness to travel, casting doubt on a circulating medical report that claims the former official is medically unfit to return to the country.
The report, dated May 14, 2025, and attributed to a physician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, surfaced on social media and in sections of the local press in recent days. Purportedly signed by Dr. Ahmed Abdalrhim, the document states that Mr. Ofori-Atta is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed condition that rendered him unable to meet with OSP officials for a scheduled interview on June 2.
In a statement issued June 3, the OSP categorically denied receiving the report, either from Mr. Ofori-Atta or his legal representatives.
“To be clear, neither Mr. Ofori-Atta nor his lawyers have submitted any such letter or accompanying medical documentation to the OSP,” the agency said.

The only formal communication the OSP acknowledged receiving from Ofori-Atta’s legal team was a letter broadly referring to a change in the former minister’s medical condition—but without any supporting clinical records or third-party validation.
The OSP took particular issue with the manner in which the alleged medical report came to public attention, noting that the document had been circulated through media channels rather than delivered through legal or investigative avenues.
“It is notable that this alleged hospital letter has been circulated through the media rather than submitted to the law enforcement agency actively investigating him and responsible for decisions regarding his return to Ghana,” the agency said.
Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently under investigation by the OSP in connection with alleged corruption-related offenses tied to his tenure as finance minister.
The emergence of the unverified medical report has stirred controversy in legal and political circles in Accra, prompting the OSP to formally distance itself from the document and raise questions about its authenticity and timing.
The Special Prosecutor’s office reaffirmed that, as of now, it has not received any certified medical evidence from a recognized institution that would justify exempting the former minister from participating in ongoing legal proceedings.
