Security authorities at Kotoka International Airport have intercepted a large cache of weapons, uncovering more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition and 20 firearms during security checks.
According to the Auditor-General’s report, 198 rounds of ammunition and four weapons were seized at the international passenger screening checkpoint, while an additional 1,879 rounds and 16 weapons were discovered at Terminal 2.
The report raised concerns over security lapses at the airport, noting that none of the passengers carrying the weapons had their travel plans disrupted. It also highlighted the absence of a clear national policy on how passengers should declare and transport firearms, describing this as a major gap in aviation security.
The Auditor-General recommended that the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) urgently develop and implement comprehensive guidelines for the declaration and screening of firearms. These measures, the report noted, should include strict verification processes and penalties for violations.
The discovery comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of small arms and heightened security threats in the country. Authorities have assured that investigations are underway and that stricter controls will be enforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.
