More than 30 students from Sawla Senior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of Ghana’s Savannah Region have been indefinitely suspended following allegations of misconduct. The majority of the affected students, predominantly female, are accused of violating Ghana Education Service (GES) regulations by bringing mobile phones to campus.
Sources within the District Directorate of GES suggest the students were also involved in other improper activities on school grounds. A seven-member committee formed by the school management investigated the claims and determined that the students were guilty, leading to the suspension.
The suspension has sparked protests from parents, many of whom allege they were not officially informed about the disciplinary actions taken against their children. Some parents report learning of the suspensions through third parties and have criticized the school for acting unilaterally without involving families in the process.
The suspension comes at a time when Sawla Senior High School is already under scrutiny. The institution has faced controversy in recent years, including incidents involving inappropriate tutor-student relationships that led to dismissals. Furthermore, the school’s academic performance has raised concerns, with Sawla SHS ranking last in the Savannah Region in the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Despite the ongoing issues, the school has not yet addressed the concerns raised by affected families, leaving parents uncertain about the future of their children’s education.
