Patience Ozokwo Honoured with Honorary Doctorate Degree

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo, widely known for her role as “Mama G,” has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Theatre and Media Arts by the Achievers Network Academy in the United Kingdom. The 66-year-old actress was recognised for her outstanding contributions to Nollywood and African cinema over several decades.

The award ceremony, held on November 30, 2024, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), also celebrated the achievements of Yoruba film legends Adebayo Salami and Jide Kosoko, who were honoured for their significant roles in the industry.

Sharing her joy on social media, Ozokwo expressed her gratitude, saying, “Today was like a movie. Honorary Doctorate Degree. Thank you, UNILAG. Thank you.”

The honourees were recognised for their immense contributions to Nollywood, which has become a global cultural force. Their impact includes memorable performances, mentorship of emerging talent, and the promotion of African culture through film.

Ozokwo, a pioneering figure in Nollywood, began her career as a radio announcer before gaining prominence with the 1999 film Authority. With over 100 films to her name, her standout roles include Ukwa (2001), Blood Sister (2003), and Billionaires Club (2003).
