Patrick Yaw Boamah, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has announced plans to contest the results of the parliamentary election in court following a narrow defeat.
On Monday, December 9, the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner, with Baba Sadiq securing 15,383 votes, narrowly beating Boamah, who received 14,949 votes.
Speaking to the media after the EC’s announcement, Boamah expressed his dissatisfaction with the results, citing concerns over the collation process and issues with some polling station results. He indicated that he would seek legal redress through the courts.
While Boamah did not provide specific details, he suggested that there were anomalies during the counting and collation of votes that warranted further scrutiny. He expressed confidence in the judiciary to handle the matter fairly, reaffirming his belief that he had won the election.
The Okaikwei Central race was one of the most hotly contested seats in the 2024 elections, with tensions running high over allegations of discrepancies and disputes during the collation process. The declaration of the winner had been delayed due to issues surrounding pink sheets.
“We are putting our documents together and will follow due process,” Boamah stated. “Once the official Gazette is published and the deadline for filing a petition arrives, we will proceed to the High Court.”
