A police officer lost his life this morning in the River Offin at Assin Asaman while participating in an operation targeting illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The officer, identified as Constable Kwabena Dogbe, drowned after slipping into the river. His body was recovered following a four-hour search.

The tragic incident occurred during a sweep conducted by the Central North Regional Police Command, part of their ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining activities in the region. Upon the police’s arrival, suspected illegal miners attempted to flee across the river. As part of the operation, Constable Dogbe was involved in the seizure and destruction of mining equipment, including changfang machines and water pumps, when he fell into the river.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
