Violence erupted in the town of Ejura in the Ashanti Region on Thursday when a group of angry youths stormed the local police station, freeing suspects on remand and setting the facility on fire.

The unrest followed the news of the death of a local resident in police custody. The man, who had been detained on suspicion of phone theft, was reported to have been in good health when he was arrested. According to Samuel Kudjoe Kwa-Sam, the Assemblyman for Ahenbobouanor, the suspect had voluntarily turned himself in and agreed to return the following day for further questioning. However, it was later reported that he had died in custody.

The revelation sparked outrage among local residents, who clashed with officers, vandalising police property before setting fire to the building. Law enforcement struggled to contain the situation as the crowd overpowered them.

The incident has raised concerns over police practices and sparked calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Authorities are yet to provide further details.
