Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the rights of Muslim women to wear the hijab freely, emphasizing the importance of religious freedom and equality.
Speaking at the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving event at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on January 10, President Mahama assured the Muslim community that his administration would uphold the constitutional rights of all citizens, including the freedom to practice their religion.
“We promised to uphold the constitutional provision that Ghanaians are free to belong to any religion and to express it. This includes how we dress. Therefore, we will protect the rights of Muslim women to wear their hijabs wherever they wish,” he said.
The President also reiterated his commitment to advancing education in underserved Muslim communities, announcing plans to offer scholarships for students to pursue degrees in medicine, law, and Information and Communication Technology, aiming to address educational disparities and promote social inclusion.
