President Mahama Swears in Constitutional Review Committee Members

President John Dramani Mahama officially swore in members of Ghana’s Constitutional Review Committee at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

The committee, tasked with reviewing and identifying gaps in Ghana’s existing constitutional framework, has been given six months to complete its work. Mahama assured members their efforts would not be in vain, emphasizing the importance of the review process in strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions.

The committee, chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), includes legal scholars, political scientists, and civil society leaders known for their expertise and commitment to governance. The group is responsible for engaging stakeholders and developing actionable recommendations to improve the implementation of previous constitutional reforms.

In his remarks, President Mahama underscored the significance of keeping the Constitution dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of the nation, stating, “This review is crucial to ensuring that our Constitution remains a living document, responsive to the evolving needs and aspirations of our people.”

The committee is made up of the following members:

1. Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman

2. Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member

3. Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member

4. Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member

5. Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member

6. Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member

7. Dr. Esi Ansah – Member

8. Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary

President Mahama expressed confidence that the committee would deliver comprehensive and impactful recommendations within the prescribed timeframe, which are expected to influence significant constitutional reforms in the years ahead.
