President John Dramani Mahama will participate in a high-level meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, alongside other African leaders, to advance institutional reforms within the African Union (AU). The meeting is part of an ongoing initiative aimed at enhancing the AU’s ability to fund its own peace operations and better support its member states.

The reforms are being spearheaded by President William Ruto of Kenya, recently appointed AU Champion for Institutional Reforms. Since his appointment, Ruto has focused on improving the efficiency and strategic direction of the AU, with an emphasis on long-term sustainability.

The Nairobi gathering will provide a platform for an in-depth review of the AU’s current state, with discussions to shape the way forward. A comprehensive report on the proposed reforms will be presented at the 38th Ordinary General Assembly session of the African Union, set for February 15-16, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

President Mahama’s participation is considered crucial, with many African leaders looking to his extensive experience to drive the reform agenda. His leadership, particularly during his tenure as Chair of ECOWAS, has earned him considerable respect among his peers.

In addition to his role in the reform discussions, Mahama is expected to use the trip to engage in bilateral talks with other African leaders, advancing his broader agenda to reset Ghana’s political and economic trajectory.
