Ghana’s President John Mahama will meet with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, on January 19 as part of efforts to mediate a lasting peace in Bawku, a region in the Upper East plagued by decades of conflict.

The visit follows President Mahama’s peace-building mission to Bawku and Nalerigu on January 14, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to resolving the ongoing unrest.

In Bawku, Mahama met with Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, the leader of the Mamprugu Kingdom, urging all parties to exercise patience as the government works to broker a peaceful solution. “I came to appeal for restraint and trust that we will resolve this matter amicably,” Mahama said.

The President also referred to his previous discussions with former President Akufo-Addo, who outlined mediation efforts undertaken during his tenure. Mahama noted that both the late Yagbonwura and Otumfuo had played instrumental roles in the resolution of the Dagbon conflict and expressed hope that similar cooperation could be applied in Bawku.

The upcoming meeting with Otumfuo is seen as a crucial step in gaining support for peace initiatives. “Whatever comes out of it, I will inform Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II,” Mahama concluded.
