A leading legal expert has called for urgent reforms within Ghana’s judiciary to ensure that legal trials are completed in a timely manner. Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, a U.S.-based Ghanaian academic, stated that there is no reason why trials should extend beyond three months.
In a post on Facebook, Prof. Asare highlighted the issue of unresolved cases dragging on for years, stressing that such delays undermine justice, fairness, and efficiency. He argued that prolonged litigation not only burdens those involved but also erodes public confidence in the legal system.
“These delays create opportunities for procedural abuses and unnecessary costs, often disproportionately affecting those with fewer resources,” he said. “A well-functioning judiciary must ensure that cases are resolved promptly, balancing due process with efficiency.”
Prof. Asare called for a series of reforms, including stricter case management, the adoption of technology to streamline judicial processes, and greater accountability within the legal system to minimize delays. He concluded by warning that a legal system unable to deliver timely resolutions risks losing its credibility.
