Prof. Jane Opoku-Agyemang Makes History as Ghana’s First Female Vice President-elect

In a historic milestone for Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been elected as the country’s first female Vice President-elect. She will serve alongside President-elect John Dramani Mahama following the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections.

In 2008, she became the first female Vice Chancellor of a Ghanaian public university when appointed to lead the University of Cape Coast. Her tenure was marked by significant reforms, including modernization of infrastructure and promotion of gender equity.

Political Journey

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang entered politics in 2013 as Ghana’s Minister for Education under President Mahama. During her tenure, she implemented transformative initiatives such as expanding educational infrastructure and abolishing makeshift classrooms. In 2020, she made history again as the first woman nominated for vice president by a major political party in Ghana.
