The J.J. Rawlings Foundation has submitted a formal petition to the Speaker of Parliament, requesting an investigation into derogatory remarks made about the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his daughter, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, a Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle.
The incident occurred during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The Foundation expressed “absolute disbelief” at the “unprintable words” spoken by a Member of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the comments as “toxic and untruthful.” The Foundation argued that the remarks were not only disrespectful to the individuals involved but also damaging to the integrity of Parliament and the nation as a whole.
In its petition, the Foundation emphasised that the comments were an attempt by certain members of Parliament to create a “toxic atmosphere” within the political environment. “Such behaviour exposes a desire to use the guise of Parliament to provoke division,” the petition stated.
The petition also highlighted the significant role played by President Rawlings in Ghana’s political history, describing him as the first President of the Fourth Republic and noting his contributions to the country’s political and socio-economic development. “His leadership was crucial in lifting Ghana out of political and economic challenges,” it read.
Regarding Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, the Foundation praised her record as an MP, citing her repeated successes in retaining her seat as an opposition member since 2017. The Foundation condemned the “crude” attempt to “shut her down” during parliamentary proceedings, describing it as a misogynistic act and a “gross abuse” that must not be ignored.
The Foundation has called for an urgent investigation into the matter and urged Parliament to ensure the offending MP acknowledges responsibility and retracts the remarks, which it labelled as “despicable and disgraceful.”
The petition has sparked renewed discussions about the tone and conduct of political discourse in Ghana, with many calling for greater respect and civility within Parliament.
