The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised serious concerns over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to re-collate and re-declare parliamentary results in some constituencies following the 2024 general elections.

In a statement on Friday, December 13, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah condemned the move, saying it was “illegal” and lacked any legal foundation. The EC relocated the collation of results for three constituencies in the Eastern Region to the National Police Training Centre in Accra due to ongoing disputes over the results.

Asiedu Nketiah argued that the process was not only outside the law but also lacked consensus with political parties. He highlighted the constitutional framework governing the declaration of election results, asserting that only EC officials at the constituency level are authorized to declare parliamentary results.

“The actions at the Police Training School amount to illegality,” Asiedu Nketiah said. “This is not grounded in any electoral laws, nor was it done with the agreement of all parties.”

The NDC leader also accused the police of aiding in what he called the EC’s unlawful actions by providing security for the re-collation process. He said the party had not been given prior notice of the re-collation and was excluded from the proceedings.

Asiedu Nketiah also took aim at the role of traditional leaders in some constituencies, urging them to refrain from political involvement. He reminded chiefs that the constitution prohibits their participation in active politics.

Responding to remarks by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the NPP’s leader in parliament, who had suggested that the NDC needed to learn about democracy, Asiedu Nketiah dismissed the comments, saying, “We need no lectures on democracy from him. We will, however, allow him to lecture us on impunity.”

The NDC chairman concluded by warning that anyone found using state institutions to commit electoral fraud would face consequences, reiterating that the party would hold those responsible accountable when it assumes power in January 2025.
