Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has ordered the impounding of several overloaded trucks for altering their axles and contributing to the rapid deterioration of the newly constructed Tarkwa–Agona Nkwanta highway.
The €95-million road project, which was completed less than a year ago, has already shown significant signs of wear, with sections of the asphalt suffering from visible rutting.
During a working visit on April 4, the minister raised concerns over the continued transportation of heavy materials, such as bauxite and manganese, which are causing extensive damage to the road. The stretch between Tarkwa–Agona Nkwanta and Takoradi has been particularly affected.
While inspecting the ongoing construction of the Agona Nkwanta–Takoradi road, which is 33.3% complete, Agbodza praised JUSTMOH Construction for their commitment to the 24-hour construction model and quality of work.
However, he stressed that no nation should allow the hauling of such heavy-duty goods on costly infrastructure, warning that it undermines road quality and safety.
In response to the ongoing damage,Mr. Agbodza launched an unannounced enforcement operation on April 7, targeting overloaded trucks. Several vehicles were flagged by an axle weighing booth and subsequently impounded, in a bid to curb further damage and enforce adherence to axle load regulations.
