The developer of the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, Quarm LMI Consortium, has confirmed that a fire at the site did not affect any housing units or important documents.
The blaze, which occurred on December 25, was caused by labourers setting fire to clear weeds as part of preparations to develop the long-abandoned project. However, the fire spread to external warehouses containing expired building materials.
During a site visit on December 26, Managing Director of Quarm LMI, Kofi Adaboh Ofori Amanfo, clarified the situation: “The fire was not in the housing units. It was in a storage area. The fire started when our labourers were clearing weeds, and they lost control of it. It spread to the warehouses, but the houses remain untouched.”
Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who was present at the site, urged the consortium to accelerate the project and adhere to safety standards. He reassured the public that the housing units were safe and that the fire had only damaged two storage sheds and containers with outdated materials.
“I’m glad to report that the housing project has not been affected,” he said. “We’ll await a report from the fire department on the exact damage to the old shed, but the housing units remain intact.”
The minister reiterated the importance of following building codes and sticking to the timelines set for the project.
