Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, has claimed that opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) are “hurt” by his nomination.
In a Facebook post made shortly after Parliament approved his appointment, despite a boycott by Minority MPs, George stated, “It is clear to me that the NPP is so hurt by my nomination and would stop at nothing to fight it.”
The Ningo Prampram MP also alleged that the Minority caucus had attempted to persuade members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus to vote against his appointment.
His comments followed the circulation of images on social media suggesting he was engaged in inappropriate activities during an Appointments Committee session. One photo appeared to show him chatting on WhatsApp, while another depicted him allegedly viewing explicit content on his phone.
George accused NPP MPs of spreading false photos and narratives to damage his reputation, describing the campaign as one of “smear and cheap lies.” He vowed to use the experience to combat misinformation during his tenure, adding, “I can assure them that the days of misinformation and cheap fabricated lies are coming to an end.”
The Minister also indicated plans to tighten regulations on misinformation and disinformation, with a focus on sanitising Ghana’s media space in the near future.
