Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, has ordered the closure of seven radio stations across the country, citing violations of broadcasting regulations and national security concerns.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, February 18, Mr.George announced the directive, revealing that one of the stations was shut down on national security grounds, while the remaining six were found to be operating without proper frequency authorisation.

The closures followed a recent frequency audit, which the Minister said highlighted the non-compliance of several stations. “In two separate cases, I have directed the National Communications Authority Ghana to suspend and enforce a prohibition of broadcast on seven radio stations in total,” he wrote.

The directive is effective immediately, with Mr. George indicating that further actions would be taken in the coming days to ensure compliance. He also reiterated his commitment to regulating the media sector and ensuring all media houses strictly follow the terms of their frequency licenses.

“I urge all media houses to ensure they are complying with ALL the terms of their frequency authorisations,” George emphasized, reinforcing the government’s efforts to maintain a clean and law-abiding broadcasting environment in Ghana.
