Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has strongly condemned the sale of AirtelTigo, the country’s third-largest telecommunications company, calling those responsible for managing the transaction “enemies of the state.”

In remarks made to reporters on Monday, March 24, Mr. Georgee expressed outrage over the deal, which saw AirtelTigo—encumbered with a GHC 3.5 billion debt—sold for a nominal sum of just one dollar. He questioned the integrity and patriotism of those involved in overseeing the sale, stating that the decision reflected poorly on the country’s interests.

“Those who managed the AirtelTigo process are enemies of our state and individuals who have no sense of patriotism,” George said, adding that the deal had placed Ghana in a precarious financial position. His comments came as the government inherited a substantial financial burden.

Mr. George revealed that one of AirtelTigo’s creditors, American Tower Company (ATC), had presented a bill of 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to the government, adding further strain to the company’s already hefty liabilities. “If someone tells you they bought AirtelTigo for just one dollar, who is going to pay the 1.3 billion that is sitting there and accumulating interest?” he questioned.

The Minister also pointed to a recent meeting with the U.S. Embassy, where concerns were raised regarding the company’s debt. The Embassy, according to George, highlighted the financial strain AirtelTigo’s liabilities could impose on both Ghana’s economy and its international relations.

This sharp criticism comes amid mounting questions about the sale of the telecommunications firm, which has sparked debate over the government’s role in managing state assets. The sale, which was finalized during the previous administration, has now become a flashpoint for political and financial scrutiny.
