Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Acting Chief Executive Sammy Gyamfi has denied claims that permanent employees of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) have been replaced as part of an ongoing restructuring within the country’s mineral sector.
In a televised interview on The Point of View aired Wednesday on Channel One TV, Mr. Gyamfi, who also serves as the National Communications Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress, emphasized that all permanent PMMC staff remain at post. “So far, I’m the only new employee of GoldBod,” he said, adding that additional hires were being considered to supplement PMMC’s workforce under GoldBod’s management.
The clarification comes amid speculation that recent staff changes at the state-run minerals trading firm were politically motivated or involved the replacement of experienced personnel with unqualified recruits. Mr. Gyamfi dismissed those allegations, stating that only contract staff—mainly at regional outposts—had been laid off, and solely for operational reasons.
“We had to painfully lay some workers off,” Mr. Gyamfi said. “But those were contract workers and also PMMC workers in our out stations, and they were laid off purely on the grounds of redundancy.”
The staffing changes are part of a broader restructuring effort spearheaded by GoldBod to revitalize Ghana’s struggling minerals sector. The initiative aims to streamline operations, increase efficiency, and maximize the country’s returns from its mineral wealth.
According to GoldBod, reforms will continue over the coming months, with a focus on optimizing resource management and improving transparency in the gold trade and other mineral markets.
