The Savannah Regional Electoral Commission (EC) has convened an emergency meeting of the Regional Inter-Party Advisory Committee (RIPAC) to address the aftermath of the violence in the Damongo Constituency following delays in the declaration of election results.

The meeting will involve key stakeholders to discuss the next steps and provide updates on the EC’s stance in light of the recent disturbances.

Violence erupted in Damongo after frustration over the delay in results led to protests. During the unrest, a group of youth stormed the Damongo Municipal Collation Centre and set the EC office on fire, causing significant damage to the building.

The chaos escalated when an NDC supporter, Sibannira Mukaila, was shot and later died after being taken to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital for treatment.

In connection with the violence, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 individuals, including those accused of involvement in the arson attack.

The incident has been strongly condemned by the National Peace Council and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP), both of which have called for calm and restraint from the community.

Eyewitnesses report that the violence stemmed from frustration over the delayed results, with the youth’s actions quickly spiraling out of control, leading to widespread destruction and the tragic loss of life.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to prevent further escalation. The EC’s RIPAC meeting aims to establish a way forward and restore peace in the constituency.
