A devastating fire that broke out at dawn in the Kantamanto market has left over 100 shops destroyed, with traders left counting their heavy losses.

As the flames quickly engulfed the area, many shop owners rushed to salvage what remained of their goods, but some onlookers took advantage of the situation. Several individuals were seen removing metal items from the wreckage, seemingly with the intent of selling them as scrap. Despite the intense heat, some of these individuals worked without protective gear, putting themselves at risk of injury.

While some traders suspect the fire may have been started deliberately, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

With their livelihoods shattered, the owners of the affected shops are now calling for urgent government support to help them rebuild. As they try to recover from the disaster, there are growing calls for enhanced safety measures in markets to prevent similar incidents in the future.
