Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has expressed his belief that practical skills, such as farming, are more valuable than mastering the English language.

Speaking in an interview with TV XYZ on Thursday, 13 March 2025, Mr. Agongo questioned why English is a mandatory subject in Ghana’s education system while agriculture remains optional.

“I’d prefer my child to know how to farm than to speak English,” he stated. “What is the benefit of English that is different from Twi or Ga?”

Mr. Agongo argued that Ghana’s future development depends on equipping the younger generation with practical knowledge rather than focusing solely on Western educational standards. He lamented the country’s growing detachment from its cultural roots, comparing it to Japan, where traditional practices remain strong.

“In Ghana, which is now like America, we’ve thrown everything away, and we’re using social media to guide ourselves,” he said.

He also warned against overindulging children, arguing that many parents today prioritize luxury over discipline. He believes that children should be taught responsibility and resilience by being exposed to life’s challenges.

“You should let them understand difficulties. Once there are difficulties, you think of alternative solutions,” he explained.

For Mr. Agongo, true success is built on self-improvement and real-world skills. He urged parents to instill the right values in their children, ensuring they grow into responsible adults capable of contributing to society.

“If we are not ready to do that and give an open cheque to our kids to do whatever they want, trust me, they will not go anywhere,” he cautioned.
