The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has condemned the violent clash on January 18, 2025, between alleged illegal miners and military personnel in Obuasi, Ashanti Region. The incident, which resulted in fatalities and injuries, has sparked criticism over the use of lethal force by the military.
In a statement issued on January 19, GNASSM expressed concern that alternative measures could have been taken to detain the alleged trespassers without resorting to deadly force. The clash involved members of Operation Halt II, a military task force deployed to combat illegal mining on the concession of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA).
The association has called for calm among local youth, urging cooperation with authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Reports indicate that at least fourteen individuals are in critical condition and receiving medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
AngloGold Ashanti confirmed the violent confrontation, stating that a group of armed illegal miners attempted to forcibly breach the company’s secured operational area. The company also reported that four vehicles were set ablaze during the incident.
While calm has since been restored, AngloGold Ashanti emphasized its continued collaboration with security forces to address the ongoing issue of illegal mining. The company reassured the public that steps are being taken to prevent further violence and safeguard its operations.
