Sokode Senior High Technical School in the Volta Region has been closed indefinitely following violent clashes between students and local residents.

The confrontation, which began on Saturday, February 22, was triggered by unresolved tensions between the two groups, resulting in injuries on both sides.

Among the injured was a journalist from Swiss FM, based in Ho, who sustained serious wounds while covering the incident. Several students and local residents also suffered injuries of varying severity.

In response to the unrest, security forces, including police and military personnel, have been deployed to both the school and the surrounding Sokode community to restore order and prevent further violence.

Francis Yao Agbemeadi, the Director of the Volta Region’s Ghana Education Service (GES), confirmed the school’s closure, stating that it was necessary to protect the safety of students and staff.

“Considering the severity of the situation, we decided to close the school as a precautionary measure,” he told Citi News, adding that transport arrangements had been made to take students back to their homes while investigations are ongoing.
