Seven nominees to Ghana’s Supreme Court have been referred to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announced on Tuesday.
The referral follows President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of the justices in accordance with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates parliamentary approval of appointments to the nation’s highest court.
The nominees are Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.
Addressing Parliament during the day’s proceedings, Speaker Bagbin directed members of both the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to support the Appointments Committee in the vetting process.
The nominations come at a time of heightened focus on judicial reforms and the structure of Ghana’s legal system.
