Deputy Attorney-General nominee Justice Srem-Sai, has reiterated his earlier statement that he saw a memo advising former Attorney-General Godfred Dame to discontinue charges against Dr. Johnson Asiama, the newly appointed Bank of Ghana Governor.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on February 26, Srem-Sai firmly stood by his claim, saying, “I stand by that comment.”
When asked if he could provide the memo, Srem-Sai explained that he could not present it due to his current position but confirmed that he had seen it through electronic records during his time as a private citizen.
This statement comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the memo. Former Attorney-General Dame had previously denied the existence of the document, insisting that the decision to drop the charges against Asiama was based on falsehoods.
Dr. Dominic Ayine, Dame’s successor, defended his decision to discontinue the prosecution, revealing that his review of the case uncovered significant weaknesses in the evidence. Ayine claimed that an internal memo from the prosecution division had advised Dame to drop the charges, which ultimately influenced his decision.
The memo remains at the heart of a heated dispute as both sides continue to challenge each other’s claims.
