The vetting of Deputy Minister-Designate for Attorney General and Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, was unexpectedly cut short following a tense confrontation between the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, and Ranking Member Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The drama unfolded when Afenyo-Markin asked Srem-Sai to demonstrate a traditional dance, explaining, “We are here to learn about our country. It’s about our culture.” However, the Chairman quickly overruled the request, deeming it inappropriate for the formal proceedings.

The exchange quickly escalated as Afenyo-Markin accused Ahiafor of being “whimsical and capricious” in his management of the vetting. Despite Ahiafor’s request for Afenyo-Markin to withdraw the comments, the Ranking Member stood his ground, stating, “Chairman, I won’t withdraw. You rudely overruled me.”

In a final show of authority, Ahiafor declared, “To demonstrate to you that I am the chairman of this particular vetting committee, that may be your last question.” The fiery dispute ultimately led to the abrupt end of the session, leaving the vetting unfinished.
