Nana Kwame Bediako, the presidential candidate of Ghana’s New Force Party, has unveiled a healthcare reform plan he believes will transform the nation’s public health sector. Dubbed the “SSNIT Revolution,” the proposal is part of his broader 12 Pillars for Economic Freedom, aimed at addressing inefficiencies in Ghana’s healthcare system.

Speaking at Hohoe Hospital in the Volta Region, Mr. Bediako highlighted the financial strains facing public health facilities, which he attributes to limited funding and the inability of many Ghanaians to afford medical care. He contends that these challenges are compounded by a lack of active financial circulation within the sector.

Under his proposed SSNIT Revolution, contributors to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) scheme would be able to access their contributions after five years to cover healthcare costs. Mr. Bediako believes this would ease the financial burden on individuals, stimulate a steady cash flow into the health system, and attract investors to the sector.

“We have a vision for this country, and the SSNIT Revolution is a key part of it. Why hold people’s money for 40 years when we could make it available after five years and use it as insurance to cover medical expenses?” he asked.

According to Mr. Bediako, this system would address the fundamental issue of fund circulation. He noted that many residents in Hohoe struggle to pay for hospital services, with some health facilities relying heavily on donations to stay operational.

He also pointed out the deterioration of hospital buildings across Ghana, saying, “Without sustained funding, these facilities become like rundown hotels after 20 years. The same issues were visible in Sunyani, Tamale, and other regions we visited. Lack of affordability and fund circulation is at the core of the problem.”

Mr. Bediako added that this insurance-backed scheme could boost investor confidence in Ghana’s health sector, drawing in funds necessary for improved healthcare delivery.

“We believe that by using SSNIT contributions as a form of insurance to cover healthcare, we will not only create a sustainable flow of money within the system but also encourage investment because the funds will be there. Without this financial circulation, few investors are willing to commit,” he said.

The SSNIT Revolution forms part of Mr. Bediako’s vision for a sustainable healthcare system in Ghana, ahead of the country’s 2024 general election.
