The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has criticised President Nana Akufo-Addo for conferring state honours on individuals he believes do not deserve them.
Speaking at the NDC’s 43rd anniversary of the December 31st Revolution in Nungua, Accra, Nketia questioned the decision to award state honours to ministers, including the outgoing Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, who he accused of involvement in violence during elections.
“We have started conferring state honours on looters and murderers,” Nketia said. “What are we doing? We are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to loot state coffers and to shoot and kill fellow Ghanaians.”
Nketia’s comments came in the wake of a recent award ceremony, which he claimed had endorsed the wrongdoings of Akufo-Addo’s appointees. He further stated that state awards should be given to those who have made significant contributions to the nation’s development, not individuals of questionable distinction.
“State awards are serious business. They must be reserved for people of distinction, individuals who have fought for a good cause,” Nketia added. “If we award state honours to vigilante groups, we are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and shoot at people.”
The NDC chairman proposed that a committee be established to determine who truly deserves the country’s honours in the future.
