Plans are underway to erect a statue in honour of the late Aliu Mahama, Ghana’s former Vice President, in his hometown of Yendi, northern Ghana. The announcement was made by his son, Farouk Aliu Mahama, the current Member of Parliament for Yendi, on Wednesday.
Speaking on JoyNews, Mr. Mahama revealed that his family has selected a prominent roundabout in Yendi as the site for the statue, where beautification work has already begun.
“The family, together with Dr. S.K. Frimpong, has identified a roundabout in Yendi for the monument. We are enhancing the area and will place a fitting statue there,” he said. The statue will be unveiled in a ceremony scheduled for November 30.
November 16 will mark the 11th anniversary of the former Vice President’s passing. To commemorate the occasion, the family will hold a remembrance session at the Zongo Naa Mahama palace.
In addition, Mr. Mahama disclosed that a segment of the Eastern Corridor road passing through Yendi will be officially named after his father. The road naming ceremony will take place on November 16, with the statue unveiling two weeks later.
The tribute to Aliu Mahama follows another recent statue unveiling by Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, who dedicated a monument in the Western Region earlier this month.
