Striking Nurses Maintains Strike Amid Legal Injunction Dispute

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is forging ahead with its nationwide strike, asserting it has not been officially served with a court injunction obtained by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to halt the action.

The High Court’s Industrial and Labour Division in Accra issued the interlocutory injunction on June 5, after the NLC deemed the strike illegal. However, GRNMA leadership maintains that, in the absence of formal service of the court order, there is no legal obligation to suspend their protest.

“As of now, none of our executives have received any injunction notice,” said Joseph Krampah, spokesperson for the union, in an interview with  Citi News on June 6. “We respect the courts and the NLC, but we cannot comply with documents we haven’t been served.”

The nurses’ union initiated the strike over delays in implementing the terms of its 2024 Collective Agreement, which includes unresolved issues such as unpaid allowances and delayed staff postings. The industrial action has disrupted healthcare services nationwide, adding pressure to an already strained public health system.

Mr. Krampah defended the legality of the strike, stating that the union followed due process in notifying authorities. “We sent a letter about the strike. If the Labour Commission believes it’s illegal and seeks an injunction, it is their duty to ensure we are properly served,” he said. “Until then, the strike continues.”

The situation underscores the growing tension between Ghana’s labor institutions and public sector unions amid broader economic and administrative challenges.
