Alhassan Suhuyini, Deputy Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has defended the importance of deputy ministerial positions, emphasizing their crucial role in ensuring government efficiency, mentorship, and effective emergency response.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 27, Mr.Suhuyini argued that deputy ministers are vital, especially in complex ministries where a single minister may be overwhelmed by the workload and responsibilities.

He stated that debates about the relevance of deputy roles are often shaped by personal experiences, rather than a broader, objective view of their impact on governance.

Mr. Suhuyini highlighted the role of deputy ministers as key for mentorship within the political space, providing upcoming leaders with hands-on experience in governance and policymaking. According to him, this mentorship strengthens government institutions and ensures continuity in policy execution.

“My personal view is that even as MPs, we have aids and there is always a need for fallbacks in times of emergencies,” he said. “The conversation about the relevance of deputy ministerial positions often stems from individual experiences, but I have spoken to others who have shared positive experiences about how they were supported and mentored by the ministers they worked with.”
