Students at Tamale Technical University (TaTU) have staged a protest to demand improved sanitation facilities and greater accountability over the use of development levies included in their tuition fees.
The demonstration, which took place on Tuesday, saw scores of students march through the campus, accusing the university’s management of neglect and mismanagement.
Speaking to reporters, the Public Relations Officer of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Mahamudu Musah, said students had been paying a development levy for years without seeing any tangible improvements on campus.
“We are hitting the streets to demand accountability and development from management,” Mr Musah said. “There hasn’t been a single project on this campus that we can point to as a result of the fees we have been paying.”
Sanitation was another major concern raised by protesters, with some describing the current state of facilities as a health hazard.
“Open defecation is at an alarming rate. There are no proper washrooms for students,” one protester said. “At times, lecturers are forced to end classes early because of the unbearable stench from nearby toilets.”
TheDotNews has contacted university authorities for a response but has yet to receive a comment.
The students have vowed to continue their campaign until their demands are met, calling on relevant authorities to intervene and ensure improvements are made.
